Second ever female Solicitor General of Jersey appointed

Advocate Victoria Bell has become the second female Solicitor General of Jersey.

She takes the position as her predecessor, Matthew Jowitt, who succeeded Mark Temple as His Majesty’s Attorney General earlier this year.

Advocate Bell was educated at Jersey College for Girls and the University of Exeter where she studied English before converting to Law.

In 2009 she was admitted as a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales and in 2016 as an advocate of the Royal Court of Jersey.

She has worked at the Law Officers’ Department since 2009, being made Senior Legal Adviser in 2024.

Advocate Bell said: “I feel deeply honoured to have the opportunity to serve as His Majesty’s Solicitor General of Jersey.

"I look forward very much to maintaining the excellent standards set by my predecessor Matthew Jowitt KC and working with him and all of my highly talented and accomplished colleagues at the Law Officers’ Department.”

Amongst other duties, the role includes providing legal advice to government departments and agencies.

Advocate Bell becomes only the second woman to hold the Crown Officer position, after Stephanie Nicolle who was SG from 1994 to 2008.
