Send-off for Team Jersey ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games

17 of the 22 Team Jersey athletes attended a send-off by the Lieutenant Governor and the Bailiff.

Team Jersey has had a special send-off at Government House before heading to Glasgow for the start of the Commonwealth Games next week.

22 islanders will be competing in athletics, bowls, judo, swimming and weightlifting

17 of them were at Government House on Tuesday evening (14 July), along with team management and supporters, where the Lieutenant Governor and the Bailiff wished them luck.   The remaining squad members are training in the UK or competing abroad.

The Bailiff, Robert McRae, told us what he is looking forward to when the competition gets underway.

"The thing I am looking forward to most is seeing Jersey athletes compete, and to see the Jersey flag at the Opening Ceremony with the other Commonwealth nations.

"To know more than 20 athletes from Jersey have met an international standard to compete is a remarkable achievement.

"I know there are 105,000 people here, but we are still a smallish community and many thousands of us will know one, or more than one, of those people who are representing our island.  It is tremendous."
