Sports Put Out Of Action

Some sports clubs and groups face a long spell out of action because of Storm Ciaran.

There has been widespread damage including at FB Fields, padel tennis centre and the Geoff Reed Table Tennis Centre.

It's an area thought to have been hit by a tornado at around midnight on 2 November, ahead of the peak of storm which brought 100 mile an hours winds.

A big clean up job is needed at Springfield, and at Les Quennevais and Grainville playing fields.

States-run sites remain closed today (3 November)

Sports Minister Deputy Lucy Stephenson says the impact on sport will last some time:

"To see such damage is, of course, incredibly difficult and I know it will be devastating for many of our sports clubs and associations who call these facilities their home. For some, recovery is not going to be quick or easy."

Inspections are going on the assess the extent of the damage and cost of repairs.

“I am grateful to all those working to make our sites safe at this time.

Safety is our number one priority and I urge everybody to stay away from the government-run sports facilities while they remain closed and the full extent of the damage is assessed.”

Many of this weekend's sports events are cancelled or postponed, including Saturday's Parkrun at Les Quennevais.
