New regulations will allow recreational fishing for Atlantic Bluefin Tuna in island waters.
25 permits will be given for 'catch and release' fishing for Bluefin Tuna.
Once classified as 'endangered', Atlantic Bluefin Tuna's status was upgraded to 'least concern' in 2021 following strong, science‑driven management across the Atlantic.
Stocks in Jersey waters are now healthy and recovered.
Permits will cost £500.
Fees will cover Jersey’s International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas membership commitments and mandatory training costs.
The government says permit-holders will be tightly regulated to ensure the highest welfare and compliance standards.
Environment Minister Steve Luce said:
“Atlantic Bluefin Tuna have returned to our waters because decades of international conservation and careful management.
"By introducing a tightly regulated recreational fishery, Jersey is taking a responsible step that supports both the long‑term protection of this species and the sustainable enjoyment of our marine environment."
