Teen Takes On 24-Hour Walk... In A Kilt!

A teenager is donning a kilt, despite chilly temperatures and hail and sleet showers, to walk for 24 hours non-stop around Jersey.

Mike Horsfall, who is 16 and goes to Victoria College, will be setting off from school today (1 April) and keep going through the night.

He is raising money for Children's Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS)  in memory of his cousin Zoë.

"This is a charity that means a lot to me as my cousin, Zoë, was born prematurely, blind, with cerebral palsy and suffered from seizures.

When she was born the doctors said, to treasure every day and memory that they had with her special as she wasn't meant to make it past the age of 10 but thankfully with the help of CHAS she managed to reach 13 before she sadly passed away in 2019."

"Any money donated to CHAS will go towards improving their facilities in hospitals, increasing the number of facilities they have in hospitals and help them buy more equipment to improve the young people and their families' lives.

Any donations will also help provide more home visits for any children or young people whose lives have been affected by a life-shortening condition like Zoë meaning they won’t have to deal with the hassle of a hospital

It can also help them be able to employ more carers to help look after these children so that the parents can rest easy knowing that if anything happens there is someone who can take care of the situation."

Mike said that if his fundraising page reached £1500 he would do the walk in a kilt.  Donations have so far exceeded £1700.

He will set off from school and through town along the seafront and around the coast to L'Etacq.  He'll come along the Railway Walk to La Fregate and then set off around the island from there.

Friends and family will be keeping him company along the way.

"In the past few walks I have been training for this.  I have done a four hour walk, a seven walk and a ten hour walk..  It is still a jump from a ten hour walk to 24 hours, but I think mentally I am definitely prepared.  Physically? I just have to live in hope!"
