Two people were taken to hospital following a fire at a flat in St Helier.

Emergency services were called out just after 6am on Sunday (11 June) after receiving multiple 999 calls about a fire.

Nine firefighters and two appliances from Green Watch attended the scene in St Helier to find up to 20 people had evacuated the building.

Two people from the affected flat were taken to hospital by ambulance with burns and smoke inhalation.

Two firefighters in breathing apparatus went into the property to ensure the blaze was fully out.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service says the most likely cause was a pet that had inadvertently turned on the hob, setting fire to things on top of the cooker.

Watch Commander Ryan has thanked residents for getting out of the building.

He's also issued a reminder to islanders to test their smoke alarms regularly and, in the event of a fire, 'to get out, stay out and call 999'.
