Unclaimed CI Co-op cash funds community projects

Money that was sitting unclaimed in dormant Co-op share accounts is being given to community projects in the Channel Islands.

These dividend balances can be from people who have left the islands, or who have passed away.

Members voted for the rule change at an annual meeting a few years ago, allowing the Society to put the cash to good use.

Six groups are sharing the first £69,000, aimed at larger ecological initiatives.

The 'Community Impact Fund' is in addition to the existing Community Fund, which offers smaller grants to groups in Jersey and Guernsey.

Simon Matthews, Chief Property and Sustainability Officer of CI Coop, says there is a 'good sum' that can be allocated 'over time':

"We see this fund sticking around from the foreseeable future and being able to contribute on an annual basis.

"As the rules of 'dormant' become more established, and accounts cross that threshold, it is possible that more and more funds will be put into this account in due course."

The Community Impact Fund will offer up to £25,000 to larger projects that have a 'clear and lasting community benefits.
