Woman (36) charged over racial assault outside Jersey's Islamic Centre

A 36 year old women will appear in court over a 'racially motivated incident' outside Jersey's mosque.

The woman - who was one of two people arrested following the alleged assault - has charged with disorderly conduct, three counts of common assault and making threats to kill.

She will appear before the Magistrate's Court on 1 April, along with a 51 year old man who was charged with disorderly conduct following Friday's assault on two muslim worshippers.

Police were called to the Jersey Islamic Centre on Aquila Road in St Helier at around 2pm on 6 March.

Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham called the incident 'deeply concerning':

"The Muslim community in Jersey has my full support. No one should ever feel unsafe or singled out because of their faith or background.

"Behaviour of this kind is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our island.

"Jersey is a community that respects and values people of all backgrounds and beliefs, and we stand together against discrimination and hatred in any form.”

Deputy Sam Mezec saw what happened and thanked police and the community for their response. Writing on social media, he said:

"Hate serves no purpose in making anyone happier or more prosperous. Our diversity is one of Jersey’s greatest strengths and must be cherished and protected.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses or information that can help with their investigation.

Officers will continue reassurance patrols for the remainder of Ramadan.
