Worries over loss of Style Group

There is deep concern about the impact of the closure of a major Jersey construction company.

The Chamber of Commerce says it is saddened by the loss of the Style Group and the loss of jobs.

The business includes related companies Style Windows, Office, Interiors, Homes and builders AC Mauger.

All are understood to have ceased trading with immediate effect.

Meetings were taking place at the firm's base at St Helier Business Park at La Pouquelaye this morning.  No one was available to comment to Channel 103.

A letter to staff reportedly cited ' challenges' that have 'made it impossible to continue'.

The exact number of staff directly affected isn't clear, but the Chamber of Commerce says it is also worried about how the loss of the Style Group will affect smaller firms that were trading with them, which will now lose contracts and money.

The business group is urging the government to fast-track capital building projects to urgently provide a pipeline of work to the sector.

Earlier this month, ministers announced the 'Investing in Jersey' plan to guarantee large infrastructure initiatives.

Mike Osborne, Building Housing and Environment Chair, said:

"Chamber have been consistently calling for the release of capital projects, as the government is by far the biggest customer of building and construction services.

"The Investing in Jersey Strategy is supported by the Chamber in theory, but in practice, but needs fast-tracking, yes, to improve facilities and the public realm and importantly to provide an urgently required pipeline locally for this sector."

"If we let more local firms go under, we’ll lose capacity to deliver housing, schools, and other essential projects.

"Costs will rise further as we rely more on off-island contractors, and local jobs will disappear. A strong, competitive local construction sector is critical to Jersey’s economy and community.

It follows the loss this year of K Land Construction and Nicholson builders.

Camerons, JP Mauger and Kalmac are among other big names in the industry that have shut down in the past two years.

The Jersey Construction Council is blaming the closure of companies in the industry on the slowdown of public and private projects.

It believes businesses are facing more challenges as a result of factors including the lack of investment into infrastructure, the high cost of borrowing and multiple government plans and policies.

In a statement, the council also reveals that Amplus Limited, a ground engineering contractor, has also closed its doors this week.

It ceased trading on Monday, 11 August 2025.

"Whilst they have not commented directly, the current lack of a visible pipeline of forthcoming public and private sector projects, we believe, has been a contributing factor, due to the unintended consequences of, amongst others, the government's policies"
