A burglar has been sentenced to 18 years in jail, with a further five years on licence, for the manslaughter of a pensioner whose house he broke into.
John Burke, 86, was assaulted during a burglary in Hackney, east London, early on 29 September last year.
He was taken to hospital, and discharged a few hours later, but died at home the next day.
Ashley Malcolm, of Hackney, had headbutted him when he was challenged during the break in.
Malcolm admitted killing the pensioner, and, on Thursday, Judge Simon Mayo KC sentenced him to a lengthy period in prison.
Judge Mayo told Malcolm: "You are now 40 years of age. You have an extensive record of previous offending, both as a youth and an adult, extending over 25 years.
"I have decided to reflect all your offending in the sentence I impose for the manslaughter of John Burke.
"I have decided that the appropriate sentence is an extended sentence of imprisonment of 23 years with a custodial element of 18 years imprisonment and an extended licence period of five years."
Speaking about Mr Burke, Judge Mayo said: "I read the victim personal statements provided by members of the Burke family.
"They reveal the devastating consequences of your offending for Mr Burke's widow, his children, his grandchildren and his wider family.
"The statements describe John Burke as a hard-working, gentle and devoted family man who was deeply loved and respected by those who knew him."
