ICE agent shoots man in Texas after traffic stop, city officials say

A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has reportedly shot a man in Texas after a traffic stop - leading to an anti-ICE protest at the scene.

The unidentified man was taken to hospital after being shot once in the chest in Austin during a brief pursuit on foot around 1pm local time on Sunday, according to local authorities.

A dark blue Toyota Corolla was photographed at the scene with damage to its passenger-side door and what appeared to be bullet holes.

Hundreds of protesters gathered later in the afternoon and swore at police officers holding riot shields. One man held a sign reading "nobody is safe" and "ICE Nazi" on the other side.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said that city police officers were not involved in the operation or the shooting, and city officials did not confirm the identity of the ICE agent.

Asked if authorities knew where the agent was, the city's mayor Kirk Watson told a news conference: "We do not know that. But my hope would be that, an agent that's involved in an officer-involved shooting would not leave the city. Certainly not leave the state."

US Representative Greg Casar, a Democrat representing parts of Austin, called for a transparent investigation.

He told reporters: "It is awful that this horror has come to our doorstep. For Austin to be safe, ICE should end its surge here."

ICE has come to represent president Donald Trump's crackdown on immigration, and its actions have drawn widespread condemnation and calls for greater scrutiny.

It carried out more than 50,000 arrests a month for the first time in its history in July and August.

In July, an ICE agent fatally shot 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, from Houston in Texas.

He was killed after federal agents driving unmarked cars pursued his vehicle while he was taking his construction crew to a job site.

The same month, 25-year-old Colombian Johan Sebastian was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Maine.

ICE was also widely condemned last winter after the killings of US citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota.

More than 50 people have also died in ICE detention since Mr Trump began his second term last year.
