Countdown to Liberation Day 2026

Liberation Day 2026 in Guernsey on 9 May marks the 81st anniversary of the island’s freedom from Occupation in 1945. It remains one of the most important, emotionally resonant days in the island’s calendar, blending remembrance with celebration.
The day will begin with crowds gathered in St Peter Port for the relay race, commemorative parade and Town Church service, honouring those who lived through the hardships of Occupation.
Veterans, service personnel and community groups take part in the annual parade, which is inspected by His Excellency The Lieutenant Governor, reinforcing the strong sense of heritage and gratitude that underpins the occasion.

As the day unfolds, the atmosphere becomes more festive. Along the seafront, especially around the piers, families and visitors can enjoy a lively programme of events including live music, a vintage fair, a food village, tea tent and market stalls showcasing local crafts and produce.
The traditional motor cavalcade of vintage and military vehicles will wind around the north of the island and into town.

St Pierre du Bois and St Andrews will host parish celebrations, with a range of events, live music and fun for all the family.
The day will conclude in town with the traditional fireworks display, with live music continuing into the evening.
Although last year was a big anniversary for the island, 2026 reminds us that every year is special.
The spirit of the day remains unmistakable: community-focused, reflective and with something for everyone.
