Builders Invited To Tender for Hospital Redevelopment

Construction companies can now register their interest in the project to modernise the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

While some specialist parts of the £90 million pound redevelopment will require off-island expertise, Health and Social Care is hoping as much of the work as possible can be done by local firms.

Building work is set to start on modernising the PEH next July.

The States is hoping the tendering process will attract interest from the local construction industry.

It's launched a Pre-Qualification Questionnaire for Phase 1 of the project which includes enlarging the Critical Care Unit and a refurbished post-theatre recovery unit with 10 beds which can be converted for future pandemic demands.

The first phase also includes new storage and change facilities for the operating theatres.

The first new clinical areas are due to open in 2022, and all the planned upgrades to the hospital are expected to be completed by 2027.

"We are starting to engage with local contractors on this exciting project. Some specialist aspects of the hospital redevelopment will undoubtedly require off-island expertise. But we very much hope as much of the work as possible can be fulfilled and supported by the local construction companies and will benefit the local economy." - Jan Coleman, Director of  Hospital Modernisation.

The design was picked in August.
