3G pitch laid at Guernsey's new home of football

Work is progressing well towards a projected March 2025 opening at the ground in St Sampsons, with the pitch laid, stand assembly well under way and the changing blocks wind and water tight.

The 3G pitch at Guernsey's new home of football has now been laid.

Those behind it say the surface at Victoria Park is the same as those used in professional football such as FIFA World Cup qualifiers and UEFA Champions League Games.

The artificial surface is 40mm deep and is laid over a foam shock pad. It is designed to enable matches to be played whatever the worst of a wet Guernsey winter, or indeed summer, can throw at it.

Contractors Rihoy have finished the ground works and put up the frames that will house the spectator stands. They say completion of those, which will offer ample, sheltered spectator capacity, is due by mid November 2024.

Work on the changing blocks is also progressing.

Gary Roberts, the CEO of the Guernsey FA, says he's pleased with the progress towards a March 2025 opening date:

“It’s great to see Victoria Park taking shape, and 10 years on since planning began, we’re pleased that the project is well on track.

The new 3G pitch will provide Guernsey football with a high-quality all-weather surface, so seeing it going down has been a particularly special moment.

The stadium’s development means the whole community will benefit from experiencing football on a world-class playing surface."
