Storm Goretti prompts stay-at-home warning in the Channel Islands

Storm force winds with gusts to 90mph and heavy rainfall are expected across the Channel Islands tomorrow evening (8 January).

The governments of Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney have released statements urging islanders to stay home, cancel social events, and secure property.

Forecasters have been monitoring the developing storm, but have consistently predicted heavy rain and winds from Thursday afternoon and overnight into Friday.

Winds are now projected to peak at 9pm tomorrow.

The Met Office says Force 12 winds on the Beaufort scale are classed as hurricane-level.

In November 2023, a storm named Ciaran swept across the islands, leaving roads blocked by fallen trees and sea debris and damaging properties.
