UK reared goats could be imported into Guernsey this year to diversify the bloodline.
The fortunes of the Golden Guernsey Goat have been very much up and down over the past two years.
In July 2024 they were given Royal status following a visit by His Majesty the King.
But one year later there was concern that the breed was struggling on its native island both in terms of breeding, and space.
A conference of experts and local breeders was convened at Government House in October 2025.
Keith Opie is the president of the Royal Golden Guernsey Goat Breed Society:
"Most of the goats now are related to the stock that comes from the Goat Farm in St Peter's and if you look they're getting a little too closely related."
Keith says a plan has been formed to rejuvenate the bloodline on the island this year:
"Since the symposium we've had a few positive moves.
"There's going to be a Foundation which will look to import four males from the UK to improve the genetic pool."
The breed has been in the island for 200 years.
