CI Pride Is Painting Town Rainbow

Events are being held throughout the week to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride 2022.

Thousands of LGBTQ+ islanders and supporters are joining in the festivities in town today (3 September).

The 70s-themed crowd will parade from Candie Gardens through town to Market Square holding a 50-metre rainbow flag.

Live local and UK acts will be performing in the Square until late tonight.

The line-up includes Element 6, The Freemasons, a P!nk tribute and Lawrence Chaney and Tia Kofi - RuPaul's Drag Race UK stars.

But the celebrations don't stop there!

As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the UK's first Pride march in 1972, CI Pride have arranged a week of activities.

On 5 September, a movie night will be held at the Princess Royal, showcasing the director's cut of the all-star LGBTQ+  film: ‘But I’m a Cheerleader’.

The OGH will be hosting a business conference the following afternoon (6 September) aiming to create an LGBTQ+ support system for Guernsey's organisations.

While on Wednesday 7 September islanders will have the opportunity to meet the US LGBTQ+ author William Dameron.

From 5.30pm-7pm at the Guille-Allès Library, he will talk about his coming out journey and sign copies of his book 'The Lie'.

CEO of Liberate in Guernsey Ellie Jones says this year's CI Pride is big:

"We've got all sorts of things going on this year, lots of music and celebrations.

It's always very fun.

Everybody's in a celebratory mood, so come and join in and find out a little bit more about the community."

Ellie says people choose to celebrate Pride for different reasons:

For some people, it's a huge celebration just to say, we're here and we're queer - and we're proud of that.

And for other people, it might be one day of the year that actually they feel that they can hold hands with their partner in St Peter Port.

And then, you have the whole global context of Pride.  There are 71 countries across the globe where it's still illegal in some way to be LGBTQ."
