Farmers are in talks with the Guernsey Dairy as it's announced the wholesale price of milk will go up by 6.3% in early January.
The price charged to milk wholesalers will rise on 7 January 2024 by RPIX, that's the cost of living excluding the effect of mortgage payments.
The shops then decide whether to absorb that rise or pass it on and usually it's the latter. That will take the price of a litre of Guernsey milk to around £1.80, arguably the most expensive milk in Europe.
Michael Bray from the Guernsey Farmers Association says they're discussing an RPIX award to them as producers.
He says although the price of fertiliser has dropped after severe increases following the Ukraine invasion, other costs are high, especially feed and electricity.
