Guernsey reservoir walk closes due to storm damage

Strong winds from Storm Austen have brought down trees along the Millennium Walk, forcing its closure.

Islanders will have to wait a while to walk around St Saviour’s Reservoir.

Storm Austen brought strong winds to the island on 23 October, bringing down trees and blocking parts of the path.

Guernsey Water says it is waiting for tree surgeons to clear the fallen trees and branches and make the area safe.

It’s the second time this year the trail has been closed, after Storm Goretti caused damage in January - although the damage is thought to be less extensive this time.

Guernsey Water's Tania Sargent asks the public to be patient.

“We know how popular the Millennium Walk is, and we never want to close it unless we absolutely have to, but unfortunately the storm has left us with no choice.

“It’s important to stress that the danger isn’t limited to the trees and branches people can see lying across the paths.

"There are also branches still hanging above the route which could come down, and until tree surgeons have been able to deal with those, we
simply can’t say the walk is safe.

“We’re in the same position as everyone else who needs tree surgeons following a storm.

“In the meantime, please don’t ignore the closure signs, and we will re-open the walk just as soon as we can.”
