Maya Wins CI Sports Personality Of The Year

Guernsey's Maya Le Tissier has won the 2022 Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year Award

The 20 year old pro-footballer won the public vote to snatch the top prize at this year's Betway Channel Islands Sports Awards.

It's the second time she has picked up the trophy, having taken the title 2019.

2022 was a very successful year for Maya, who started out playing for Guernsey's St Martin's AC.

She moved from Brighton, where she had played for four years, to join Manchester United in July.

Le Tissier also made her international debut after being called up for the Lionesses in November.

Accepting the award via video-link Manchester, Maya described it as a special moment and said she really appreciates all the support:

She's now looking forward to the year ahead.

"I'm taking each game as it comes, of course with the England squad and the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand I'll be doing everything I can to put myself in the best position I can.

Keep going with Manchester United, just keep on improving and see what happens."

Maya Le Tissier accepted her CI Sports Personality of the Year 2022 award via video link from Manchester.

She was nominated alongside Lucy Beere, who brought home the Channel Islands first Commonwealth medal after a near 30 year drought.

Beere bagged the silver accolade in the lawn bowls after Australian Ellen Ryan came out on top by 21 shots to 17.

Speaking to IslandFM at the awards ceremony at Jersey's Royal Showground, Lucy Beere says 2022 will be hard to top.

"Not only did I get the silver medal and watch Alastair (Chalmers) win the bronze but for me personally to get an MBE was just the icing on the cake for me.

I don't think realise the hours that people put in behind the scenes. Sorting out kits and helping with minuscule things that you think aren't important but actually to us as athletes they are."

Also nominated was Guernsey athlete Alastair Chalmers. 2022 saw him claim the island's first ever Commonwealth track and field medal after finishing third in the 400m hurdles in August last year. He also made a new personal best at the games, finishing the race in under 49 seconds.

Alastair told fans at a Q&A shortly after that the upcoming Island Games will 'probably be my last'.
