A weather station has been installed in St Peter Port to increase the quantity and quality of data used for weather forecasting in Guernsey.
Guernsey Met Office has been trialling a weather station at Government House for the last nine months and are officially satisfied with its quality.
The temperatures recorded at Government House have been around 1°C higher than those collected at Guernsey Airport, due to the location and less exposed nature of the site.
Senior Meteorological Officer for Guernsey Ports, Adam Heaume says the location provides representative data for the most populated area of the island.
“This is an ideal location for the weather station, and we are extremely thankful to His Excellency for his support in allowing us to use the gardens at Government House.
We have been working closely with Jersey Met to find a secondary location in Guernsey from which to collect reliable weather data.
Jersey Met have provided the automated weather station, which will help the Jersey Met team when forecasting for the Bailiwick."
Weather forecasts for the Bailiwick are produced by Jersey Met, who use the data collected at Guernsey Airport to forecast for the Bailiwick as a whole.
The official weather records for Guernsey will continue to be collected at Guernsey Airport - as they have since 1947.
