Strong winds stop yacht race from getting to Guernsey

Weather prevents more than 100 yachts sailing to St Peter Port from Cherbourg.

Competitors moored in Cherbourg were told that the weather had forced the cancellation of the stage from there to St Peter Port.

Specifically, it is the sea conditions in the Alderney Race, known to the French as the Raz Blanchard, that have made organisers cancel today's stage.

The short stretch of water between Alderney and France is known for its strong currents and has been earmarked for future tidal power exploitation.

The Tour des Ports has been going for 42 years and began on Sunday 6 July at Saint Vaast on the eastern tip of the Cotentin peninsula.

106 yachts and 500 crew were lined up to make the dash across the Channel and overnight in Guernsey before heading directly across the water to nearby Dielette.

It would have been the biggest annual race since the pandemic, and is seen as a useful promotion for Guernsey as a boating destination.
