Temporary Sixth Form Centre opens in Guernsey

A Level and IB students have had their induction day at the old La Mare de Carteret High School.

While Guernsey awaits the completion of a new post-16 campus at Les Ozouets, students have moved into a temporary Sixth Form at La Mare.

Principal Kieran James says the vision to create a professional, adult learning environment has come to fruition.

"Every wall has been repainted, the study hall has been recarpeted, we have new tables and chairs, new curtains, new screen projectors, and the library has been completely transformed into a lovely, calm, and cosy space where students can come to and snuggle up with a book or work."

The Policy and Resources Committee approved £283,000 of funding to improve the space.

Mr James says the majority of the equipment will be transferred to Les Ozouets when it is ready.

"The tables all stack and can be wheeled out, and the chairs come on trollies that we can wheel off with us.

"The ViewSonic boards are portable because they’re all quite high-end devices.

"A lot of the kit, a lot of the fixtures and fittings and a lot of the resources for learning will be coming with us."

He says, despite the facility being labelled temporary, the lessons being taught there are important.

"There’s nothing temporary about the education the students are receiving.

"They are receiving the best education we can provide them in Guernsey.

"They only get one chance at this, and we’re gonna make it fantastic."
