Afghan Response Talks Continue

No firm decision has been taken yet on what assistance Jersey will offer in response to the situation in Afghanistan.

The government says Ministers have met to consider how to support refugees, and have asked officials to explore 'concrete ways' to help.

It says they recognise the challenges and limitations of what it calls 'our highly constrained island setting'.

Ministers are due to meet again this week to consider the options.

“Jersey has always supported refugees in various ways, recognising the challenges and limitations of our highly constrained Island setting.

“Within this context, Ministers have asked officials to explore concrete ways to help and will meet again this week to consider the options."

We're told that, at the same time. Jersey Overseas Aid is gathering data from its partners in Afghanistan and 'considering the best options for providing humanitarian support'.

10,000 Afghans are currently in quarantine hotels in the UK awaiting resettlement.

The British government has confirmed that will get immediate indefinite leave to remain.
