Call for more eastern play facilities as Sandy Park reopens

The Constable of Grouville is calling for more play and sports facilities in the east of the island, as one popular play area in Gorey reopens.

Sandy Park is useable again, just in time for the school summer holidays.

It has been closed for around five weeks for maintenance work - which has included installing a new fence and upgrading and repainting the equipment.

The parish took over control of the site at Long Beach last month, around a year after agreeing to.

Constable Mark Labey said:

"We are very proud that it's back to its former glory and we will be carrying on a full quarterly upgrade every time we get a report to make sure it's safe for everyone who uses it.

"It's in such a beautiful spot that we really hope that everybody will enjoy it again."

Constable Labey hopes there will be more facilities in the east of the island, on top of Sandy Park and the playground at St Martin's village green.

He added:

"We're hoping that, perhaps, the large schools will allow us to open up their facilities in the evenings because we have very few public access play and sporting facilities in the far east, and it will be lovely to have more of those.

"The eastern district Deputies and Connétable have been talking about this for quite a long time now, and we know the budgetary constraints, but we really do think that something needs to happen in the east of the island."
