UPDATE: Candle-lit beach evening for lost loved ones postponed

Islanders going to a Jersey Hospice Care event to commemorate loved ones at St Brelade's Bay are being told the event has been postponed.

The beach was supposed to be illuminated with candles on Saturday evening (24 May), for islanders to remember loved ones and find solace around others going through the same experience.

However, this has now been moved to 2 August 2025 at 8:30 pm, due to the weather forecast this weekend.

It is predicted there will be a 90% chance of rain, with southwesterly moderate to fresh winds, veering west later on in the evening.

The special evening, now later in the summer season, will have live music, readings and reflective time.

Emily Churchill, Spiritual Care Lead at Jersey Hospice Care, says it's important not to grieve alone:

"There’s something very supportive about coming together with others who are also missing someone who has died.

"We don’t consciously remind ourselves that we’re grieving because a life has been lived, memories have been created, and love has been shared.

"Coming to Candles on the Beach allows you to stand next to a stranger, and without sharing a word, you know that they understand.”

Those wanting to attend are encouraged to book in advance and to donate for their candle.
