Chief Minister Agrees To Reform Meeting

The Chief Minister has agreed to meet with Reform Jersey as a vote of no confidence in her leadership looms.

In a letter to the party's leader and deputy leader, Sam Mezec and Lyndsay Feltham, the Chief Minister says she is always happy to speak with States Members about the government.

Reform Jersey invited Deputy Kristina Moore to crisis talks following Deputy Tom Binet putting forward the leadership challenge last week (2 Jan).

Deputy Sam Mezec told Channel 103 that his party members would need 'very serious assurances' from the Chief Minister before they could support her in the vote.

It was reported that he wanted a Reform deputy on the Council of Ministers.

In her reply to the invitation, Deputy Kristina Moore seems reluctant to strike a deal and says that Reform has 'regularly opposed' the government's policies.

"Notably, Reform Jersey voted against the Government’s Common Strategic Policy and against both Government Plans in this parliamentary term.

I note that Reform members put forward a number of amendments to the most recent Government plan, which reflect your manifesto commitments, and most of these were rejected by the Assembly."

She has accepted the invite, but will not turn up alone.

"I am always very happy to meet States Members to discuss ways in which we can work together, and my office will be in contact with you to agree a time. I will invite other members of the ministerial team to attend as well.

I will approach this meeting in the spirit with which I hope your offer is made. I am open to working together constructively with all States Members.

I must emphasise though that such an approach will require collaborative working and compromise, and not simply agreeing to implement the manifesto of any one individual or political party."

The party is made up of 10 members, whose votes could prove crucial.

It's believed that the Council of Ministers will back their boss in the vote, giving Deputy Moore at least 12 votes.

Other States Members have also indicated that they will back her. A simple majority of 25 is needed for Deputy Moore to survive.

The vote will take place on 16 January.
