Chief Minister sets out vision as new States Assembly meets for first time

Lyndon Farnham has been appointed Jersey's Chief Minister and set out his vision for the island.

The Senator - who finished third in the polls at Jersey's general election this month - was the only candidate for the top job, following a 'mutual agreement' with Helen Miles not to challenge for the role.

Farnham to remain Chief Minister

He first became the island's leader in 2024, following a vote of no confidence in Kristina Moore's government.

Senator Farnham has made a speech to the States Assembly, outlining his vision for Jersey.

"Jersey stands at an important moment in its history.

"Since becoming Chief Minister, my priority has been to provide stability, maintain momentum and focus Government on the issues that matter most to Islanders. Important progress has been made, but there remains much to do. The next Government must build on that progress with a clear sense of purpose and direction."

"My vision is straightforward.

"I want Jersey to be a place where people can afford to live well, where housing is within reach of more Islanders, where businesses can invest and grow with confidence, where public services perform to a high standard, and where Government manages public finances responsibly while continuing to invest in the Island's future. Above all, I want Jersey to be a confident Island that looks forward with optimism and ambition.

He told States Members that Jersey should build on recent progress through disciplined government, economic growth, improved affordability, and effective public services.

He said he would 'provide stable, pragmatic and collaborative leadership', focusing on the key priorities of stronger fiscal discipline, a growing and competitive economy; action to improve affordability and expand housing opportunities;  better public services; greater efficiency in Government; and improved opportunities and quality of life for islanders.

His vision statement concluded:

"Islanders are not looking for grand promises. They are looking for practical solutions, steady leadership and delivery. That is the approach I will bring as Chief Minister."

It was the first meeting of this States Assembly, with a quarter of it made up of new faces.

Of those, Deputies Lee Carpenter, Victoria Li, Phil Romeril and Constable Dave Curtis asked their first questions, as Senator Farnham faced an hour of scrutiny ahead of his appointment as Chief Minister designate.

He has until next Friday (26 June) to submit his list of nominations for Ministers.  Helen Miles is set to get Home Affairs.

Channel 103 expects positions for Ian Gorst, Alan Maclean, Tom Binet, Mary Le Hegarat, Elaine Millar, and Sir Mark Boleat.

The Council of Ministers will be appointed in a special sitting on Monday 29 June.
