Simon Calder on drone havoc: 'Deeply troubling that somebody thought this would be a good idea'

Travel journalist Simon Calder has told Channel 103 the illegal use of drones in Jersey airspace over the weekend is 'absolutely dreadful'.

On both Friday and Saturday nights, drones being flown in Jersey airspace without permission caused major disruption to flights.

Channel 103 has spoken to travel expert and journalist Simon Calder:

"Absolutely dreadful what's been happening at the weekend - very, very disruptive, but also a little bit worrying.

"Of course, passenger safety was never compromised, but the very fact that people see fit to operate drones near the airport, which is absolutely crucial infrastructure for the island, is extremely concerning.

"Drones and planes do not mix; they should not be anywhere in the same vicinity, and it's deeply troubling that somebody thought this would be a good idea."

Police investigations are ongoing, with officers saying they're pursuing 'every available avenue' to find those responsible.

Jersey authorities are working with UK and specialist agencies to strengthen the island's capability, with the aim of preventing it from happening again.

Some people, including Jersey Rugby Club players and management, only arrived back in Jersey today (2 November), with some still stranded in London.

Mr Calder added:

"If you were in the UK or Europe trying to reach Jersey, then you're entitled to a duty of care under air passenger rights rules.

"You're not going to get any compensation because this is clearly beyond the airlines responsibility, they're as appalled as everyone else.

"So I'm afraid you kind of have to put it down to experience and simply hope that the island authorities, perhaps with the help of UK Government, can figure out what's been going on and make sure it stops.

"There are severe penalties under the island's law for using drones near an airport and I have to say that making an example of someone could be a good way of reducing the possible risk of repeats."
