Details announced of free childcare for two and three year olds

Families in Jersey have been told how they can apply for 15 hours free term-time childcare for two and three year olds from January 2026.

The government help is worth up to £6,270 a year.

An estimated 700 families will be eligible, costing around £4.5 million in total in the first year and £5.3m in 2027.

Applications will open in February and the first payment made in arrears in April.

Reimbursement will be made in up to three installments following proof of payment from a registered provider, which includes nurseries and childminders.

Education Minister Rob Ward described it as 'a significant step forward in supporting families and investing in the early development of our youngest children.'

“It reflects our determination to provide children with the best possible start in life and to address affordability, which over 90% of parents surveyed identified as their top concern.

"This universal approach means there are no working, income, or residency conditions, ensuring that every eligible family can benefit."

Jersey Child Care Trust will offer support to families who struggle to afford the upfront cost.

Fiona Vacher, CEO of JCCT: "This new funding scheme will make a real difference to families across Jersey.

"By reducing the financial barriers to childcare, parents can focus on work, study, and family life, while children benefit from high-quality education and care.

"JCCT is proud to work in partnership with the Government of Jersey to support those who need additional help to access this funding.”

To be eligible, your child must have turned 3 after 1 September 2025.
