First Energy And Climate Change Minister Appointed

Deputy Hilary Jeune becomes the island's first minister for Energy and Climate Change.

She had already been working in the Environment Department as Assistant Minister since being elected to the States Assembly in June.

Deputy Jeune is the first to take up the newly-created portfolio, which was part of the recommendations in the Carbon Neutral Roadmap.

Environment Minister Deputy Jonathan Renouf has delegated responsibility for energy and climate change matters to her.  He says it is a move that shows the government is serious about reaching the 2050 net-zero target.

"In these first months working together, Deputy Jeune has demonstrated an in-depth knowledge and understanding of this area.

Her background in scrutinising and advising international organisations on climate change policies means she is well-placed to drive forward our work with real passion and ensure Jersey accelerates its carbon reduction over the course of this term of government.”

Deputy Jeune will join world delegates as the island's representative at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 in Egypt in November and says she's really excited to lead the work on energy and climate.

"We're thankful for our invite to COP27 and is further evidence of the respect shown for our carbon reduction efforts and plans.

It’ll provide an opportunity to share best practice with leaders from other jurisdictions, and to learn from success stories from other small Island nations.”
