A Jersey-based non-profit organisation is launching a free 12 week course for islanders struggling with chronic health conditions.
The programme has been put together by Lifestyle Medicine Jersey.
It's aim is to help those with metabolic syndrome, which is a combination of conditions such as being overweight, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol or pre-diabetes.
One in three islanders are thought to be at risk of the illness. Anyone who believes they might be affected is invited to apply for the scheme.
It will consist of:
• Six 60-to-90-minute group education sessions
• Learning about nutrition, movement, stress management, sleep and social connection
• Six optional practical sessions, such as exercise or cooking classes, to build confidence and skills
• A supportive community to help participants stay motivated
Dr Jo Darwood and Lauren Perchard-Rees are running the programme, which has been funded by the Jersey Community Foundation.
Lauren Perchard-Rees
Lauren tells us it is vital something is done to support the many Jersey residents with chronic conditions:
"Looking at the Jersey statistics, we know that one in three adults have a chronic health condition, with about 15% of people having two chronic health conditions.
"The main causes - like 75 - 95% of chronic diseases - is caused by smoking ,excessive drinking, poor nutrition and lack of physical activity.
"We want to try and prevent people getting even more serious health conditions. What can start as a mild chronic condition could actually put you more at risk of more scary health conditions like heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, dementia."
