Gas Switch On Gets The Go-Ahead

Island Energy say its turning the gas plant back on tomorrow, with most of the 4,500 households and businesses getting energy by the weekend, if initial tests go as planned.

The gas company has taken the decision to switch on the supply after islanders faced a fourth day with no hot water, cookers or heating.

Despite the plant running tomorrow (11 October), the company will be monitoring it for 24 hours before telling islanders what to do next, which means, unfortunately, people will go more days without gas.

Earlier the gas company's CEO, Jo Cox, told Channel 103 that if there is a go-ahead supply will be given to most customers by the weekend.

"A lot of islanders will be, but I can't guarantee all islanders will be."

Island Energy says it will be contacting customers individually to tell them when it is safe to turn their gas back on, as part of a strategic process.

A number of customers still require a visit from an engineer, which will start on Thursday.

The latest advice from the energy firm is:

Please do not turn on your gas until you have been told it is safe to do so. We have clear instructions of how to restore the gas to your home and we will be communicating with you via:

  • A letter directly to your home,
  • Social media (Facebook and X formerly twitter),
  • Our website,
  • Local media.
