Government gives £150k to get Jersey athletes to 2027 Island Games

Jersey's 2025 Island Games team

Jersey's government is giving an extra £150,000 to the Island Games team.

It has stepped in to support athletes with travel and accommodation costs for the Faroe Islands.

It was feared the team would be far smaller than in past competitions because of costs of more than £3,000 each to make the 900 mile journey.

The one-off grants is coming from expected underspends this year in the Economic Development department.

Up to 240 athletes from 14 sports are set to benefit from the money, distributed by Jersey Sport, to the Island Games Association of Jersey.

Senator Serena Kersten, Assistant Minister with responsibility for sport, says, if Jersey is serious about hosting a future Island Games again, it needs to support local people to take part.

“Reducing barriers in sport is crucial to the long-term health of our Island and I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to assist for 2027.

“I’m concerned that our athletes might miss a great opportunity to compete on an international stage simply because of affordability.

"If we are serious about hosting another Island Games in the future and inspiring the next generation, we have to support our athletes now and help them realise their dreams.”

Economic Development Minister Deputy Gerald Voisin said:

“The Island Games is important to Jersey. Not only does participation promote the Island on an international stage, but they bring our community together, give us moments of pride and give athletes a chance to showcase their talent.

"Representing Jersey should be about sporting achievement, not affordability, and we’re committed to supporting the opportunities these Games create for Islanders.”

Jersey is aiming to host the 2035 Games and is expected to be named as preferred bidder in 2028.
