'Independent' Climate Council To Be Set Up

The Environment Minister is hoping to set up a five member Climate Council which will observe the government's progress on its Carbon Neutral Roadmap.

Deputy Jonathan Renouf wants to see people with a range of expertise on the board including energy, economics, climate technology and income inequalities.

At least one of those must be a full-time Jersey resident.

The panel will be independent from the government, but members will be selected by the States, if the proposition is passed.

They will develop a report on the progress made towards carbon neutrality every four years.

It was previously agreed by the last States Assembly that a board needs to be made up to track the progress of Ministers.

The selection process is expected to take place at the start of 2025 and the first report will be published 12 months after that, in the first quarter of 2026.

It's estimated that the Climate Council will cost around £40,000 - £60,000 in pay and expenses across every report cycle, but Deputy Renouf says that funding won't be needed until the selection process in 2025.

The proposition will be debated in February.
