Jersey's Young Musician Dazzles Audience

Cosimo Dhami-Hounsome has become the sixth flautist to win Jersey's Young Musician competition.

The teenage musician took home the PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year 2024 trophy home after performing the flute in the finals on Saturday (24 February).

Cosimo showed off his talents, at Victoria College's Great Hall, in a short programme, which the judges decided was the most expressive and technically adept.

In the 32 years of the competition's history, only five other flautists have won the prize, with Katherine Beirne the last to win eight years ago, in 2016.

Many other winners of the competition have gone on to have successful careers in music.

Cosimo has been awarded £1,000 from PwC to support the future of his musical studies.

Dr Graham Cox, Principal of Jersey Music Service, says the competition is one of the Island’s longest-established artistic competitions.

"Each year I am blown away by the high standard of entries at the heats."

The competition winner even received support from former Housing Minister Deputy David Warr, who shared his experience of the night on X.

Abigail McDermott, Marketing Director at PwC, says it is fantastic to see year-on-year the wealth of musical talent in our local community.

"This competition really showcases the very best of Jersey’s young, gifted and disciplined musicians."

The other finalists who performed on Saturday include:

  • Jersey Premier Brass - Brass Heat – Summer Watkins (trumpet)
  • Jersey Vocal Trust - Vocal Heat – Poppy Pendergast (vocal)
  • Wendy Falla Piano Heat – Jason Hoare
  • The Band of the Island of Jersey Percussion Heat – Matt Jackson
  • Dorothy Chapman String Heat – Edward Clark (violin)
