Last Spinathon In Memory Of Cyclist

Jay Morris' parents have announced this year's Spinathon will be the last.

The fundraising event is held in memory of the racing cyclist who passed away in 2003 after battling cancer.

Each year Jay's parents, Alan and Jenny, organise the Spinathon at Club Carrefour in St Lawrence to raise money for Jersey Hospice Care.

So far, the family has raised £250,000 over 20 years.

Alan Morris says Jay would have appreciated everyone who has taken part to help raise money.

"My wife and I, we just put everything together, which is a lot of work, but it's the people that take part that raise, and have raised all that money.

A lot of those people are Jay's friends, who have stuck with us all these years."

Jersey Hospice Care helped look after Jay in his final weeks at his home.

Alan says the care and the attention patients get in their last few weeks is unparalleled.

"I don't think any hospital could provide the same amount of attention and care people get.

They really look after them, and the staff are dedicated.

Jersey Hospice Care was there every day, looking after him, and they become like family."

Around 70 islanders have signed up for the final Spinathon with a few spaces left.

Each person will spend an hour on a bike, cycling to raise money for charity, between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm.
