Man (42) Jailed For Various Drug Offences

Matthew Charles Harris has been sentenced to a year in prison for drug offences.

The 42-year-old was first caught on CCTV posting an envelope containing £1,000 in cash to Liverpool in July 2022.

Jersey Customs and Immigration intercepted a second letter 12 days later, containing Subutex tablets with a street value of £8,000 addressed to Harris.

Subutex are a substitute for opioids like heroin and is prescribed to people trying to stop taking drugs.

He was then arrested, and his property was searched. Officers found cannabis and steroids.

Harris' phone was examined, and texts were discovered between him and his UK supplier discussing the packages.

Officers also found more communications relating to the supply of cannabis.

The 42-year-old appeared before the Royal Court in October 2023 and pleaded guilty to all charges.

Detective Sergeant Jim McGranahan, Head of the Drug Squad, says the force is committed to removing illegal drugs from Jersey.

"We continue to work with our partners and other agencies to protect our community from the harm these drugs can cause.

The Drug Squad are supported both internally and externally by many outside partner agencies and collectively they work hard together to achieve the same goal of keeping the island safe and as drug-free as possible."
