Man found guilty of violently attacking his date

Conor James has been found guilty of beating and strangling a woman he met on a dating app.

The 34 year old has been convicted of grave and criminal assault and malicious damage following a four-day trial at Jersey's Royal Court..

James repeatedly hit his victim and strangled her after being invited to her St Helier home and becoming drunkenly violent.

He gave her multiple injuries, and left her bruised and swollen on her face, head and body, and her lip cut.

The officers who were called to reports of a distressed and injured woman found blood in the home and communal areas.

James also destroyed the victim’s mobile phone - preventing her from contacting police.

She was able to get out and ask members of the public for help.

DC Bogdan Jagodka said: “This was a serious and sustained assault which left the victim with significant injuries and genuinely fearing for her life.

"While alcohol and substance use were factors in this case, they do not excuse or justify violent behaviour. Responsibility lies entirely with the offender.

"This type of offending reflects the harm we continue to see in cases of violence against women and girls, and we are committed to working with partners to prevent abuse, support victims, and bring those responsible before the courts.

"I would like to commend the victim for her courage in reporting what happened and supporting the case through to court.”

James has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced at a later date.
