More Islanders Eligible For Social Housing

More islanders are joining the waiting list for social rented housing following a change to who is eligible.

People without children can access the Affordable Housing Gateway at the age of 40 instead of 50.

The Housing Minister has vowed to reduce the entry age for childless islanders to 25 by 2025.

Deputy Russell Labey announced the ambition in January when he published the Fair Rents Plan -  his policies to 'improve the rental market'

Income limits have changed and a £70,000 household savings limit introduced.

Instead of a single income limit of £40,000 per year, there are now multiple limits depending on who is in the household.

They range from £23,000pa for a single person with no children to £64,000 for a joint applicant with three or more children.

“I am pleased to implement these changes, first announced in my Fair Rents Plan. The updated criteria mean that more Islanders will be eligible for social housing. I have also committed to a further reduction in the entry age for Islanders without children, bringing this down to 25 by 2025.

“Those already on existing waiting lists will have their current position preserved. An expanded Gateway will introduce more fairness to the eligibility rules and better reflect the true need for social housing in the Island.” - Deputy Russell Labey
