Smoking could be banned in outside eating areas in St Helier.
The parish has launched a consultation, which it said follows reports on health benefits and public opinion.
“We want to promote more healthy living. We’ve had a lot of feedback from people who dine in al-fresco areas saying that smoke does spoil their enjoyment.” – Silvio Alves – Director of Technical and Environmental Services
A States survey in 2014 found that 57% of people were in favour of smoke-free al fresco areas.
Mr Alves thinks there’s a strong appetite still to stop smoking when people are eating outside these establishments.
“It’ll go back to the Roads Committee. It’s very likely that it will be supported because it’s always good to promote the health benefits this will have.”
The Committee is asking people to give their opinions by emailing townhall@posh.gov.je
