Storm Austen: Clean-up continues

Work continues to clean up the damage caused by Storm Austen.

Gusts of more than 80 mph hit Jersey yesterday (Friday), with many large trees falling and branches scattering across roads.

You can read all the details on the impact of Friday's storm here.

Priority was given yesterday to clearing fallen trees, large branches, and blocked road gullies to make roads safe.

Today, work begins on sweeping smaller debris and leaf litter from roads and footways.

However, conditions will be challenging as heavy rain is forecast.

Paul Aked, Head of Jersey Met, said:

"Winds will pick up again over the weekend, particularly Saturday afternoon. We are in for a particularly wet day as well on Saturday, and, of course, we've got some trees that have been damaged, some infrastructure that has been damaged.

"We should still take care when we're out and about because there could still be lots of work going on as we tidy up, but equally there could be fragile trees etc and with those winds and that rainfall, we could see a little bit more impact.

"As we move into next week, there'll be periods where there is less wind, but there's still going to be windy periods and (it will) perhaps (be) through the middle part of the week towards the end (when) we'll see it really decrease, and we'll see certainly less winds around."

Many roads and sites that were closed yesterday are reopening today, including all Jersey Heritage sites.

Regarding Elizabeth Castle, a decision will be made as to whether conditions are safe for the ferries to run.

Anyone planning to visit the Castle is asked to phone 633300 ahead of their trip.

Queen's Valley and Val de la Mare reservoirs will remain closed over the weekend.

With heavy rainfall and strong winds expected over Saturday and Sunday, Jersey Water says it's unsafe to reopen the sites before thorough inspections can be carried out.

Full assessments are expected on Monday, and closure sights remain on the gates.
