Take Your Tins To West's Centre

The Shelter Trust's annual 'tinathon' has taken place in West's Centre today (6 Oct).

The charity has been taking donations of tinned foods to stock the shelves at its homeless shelters.

Trustee, Richard Robins told Channel 103 they are needed now more than ever.

"We're seeing a much bigger demand for food parcels. People are coming to our hostels and asking for help. So all the help we can get with tinned food is brilliant."

Despite the cost of living crisis, Richard says the charity has seen an uplift in donations.

"People are much more aware now of what's going on. Part of what we are doing today is trying to raise awareness of the fact there are over 100 homeless people living in Jersey, even if you don't see them around on the streets."

Housing Minister, Deputy David Warr set out the definition of 'homeless' for the first time last October.

According to Richard, the amount of people who are classed as homeless has 'stayed level'.

"It got worse during the pandemic when people lost their jobs, it has settled down a bit now and it remains fairly steady."
