The New Millennium (Skate)Park?

New multiuse benches have been added to Millennium Town Park to encourage a skate-friendly space.

The seats, sourced and made in Jersey, can be found at the back of the park, and have already proved popular.

It is hoped they will act as a new space for islanders since the front of the park is already a popular spot for some of the skating community.

The Vice President of the Jersey Skateparks Association, Daco Fernandes, says they are really excited about this initiative and how it will make skateboarding and other wheeled sports more accessible.

"We're really pleased that these new facilities are happening in St Helier, and look forward to announcing more developments soon."

Phil Minty, Chairperson of Skateboard Jersey, says integrating skate facilities like this into public spaces has been a huge success in many places worldwide.

"This addition to St Helier is a great step forward for skateboarding in Jersey, bringing an energetic new element to our most urban and densely populated parish."

Work is ongoing to plan a new skate park in town to replace the facilities on New North Quay (pictured above)

It follows the opening of the new £1.9 million skatepark at Les Quennevais Playing Fields in February.

Sports Minister, Deputy Lucy Stephenson, says this is the first step towards making skate facilities a permanent feature in town.

"Les Quennevais Skatepark has been very popular, and we recognise the importance of providing facilities in town and are focusing on this."
