Top padel stars playing in Jersey

Some of the world’s top padel players are in Jersey for an international tournament!

Island Padel in St Clement is hosting the FIP Silver Rathbones Island Padel tournament, after the island hosted the bronze event last year.

23 of the top-100 ranked players will be among those competing over the next few days.

Qualifying is underway today, with the main draw getting underway tomorrow (31 July).

Morgan Jubb, co-founder of Island Padel, said:

"We have about 120 international padel players coming in from all over the world, and 23 of them are in the top 100, which is absolutely massive for Jersey, and we are really excited to host this event."

Former Jersey tennis star Jonny Clayton will be competing alongside Sam Macneil, with their first main draw game against French pair Manuel Vives and Olivier Guy De Chamisso.

Clayton said:

"It's amazing to have this calibre of player come over to play at the facility.

"We've held this event for two years, but also a high national event before that, and we've always tried to get the best players we can - this year is by far the highest calibre of players we have.

"It will be a great experience. Both Sam and I come from tennis backgrounds, Sam has played padel a bit longer than myself competitively, but you never know in sport do you - we could be the Leicester City of the Premier League!"

Jersey pair Jon Southern and Reuben Legge have qualified for the main draw after a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Gareth Nicol and James Harte.

Luke and Cameron Gomes from Guernsey have missed out after a 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 defeat to GB pair Alex Whitaker and Hayden Kalinins.
