Town Bus Trial Set For April Or May

The trial of a bus service similiar to the popular Hoppa in 1999 is due to start nearly a year late.

It was announced in January 2021 that it was due to start in that same summer.

The Chief Minister then approved plans in August 2021 to get it started last year.

£364,953 has been budgeted for the first year of the initiative, with an extra £339,953 for each of the next two years.

The service will loop around St Helier - linking Liberation Station, the Town Hall, the Hospital, the Central Markets and residential areas in the north of town.

Deputy Rob Ward raised the issue of the delay in the States Assembly during the debate on allowing buildings of more than eight storeys in St Helier in 'appropriate circumstances.'

"We still don't have the mythical Hoppa bus. The Hoppa bus that exists as a vision.

We have many visions for St Helier, but we have very little reality."

Senator John Le Fondré replied later in the same debate to say it's 'still on course for the end of April or early May'.

"The vehicles are currently under construction. Delivery is presently scheduled for mid to late April.

The route has been signed off, there may be some minor adjustments to that but that's ongoing.

Like other (States) members - including the Connétable of St Helier and the Minister for Infrastructure - I eagerly await their arrival and hope we don't get any further delays in that process.

It is on schedule, it has been signed off many many months ago and hopefully we will see that in action in due course which will be, again, an improvement which actually will be at the behest of this government."

The government said last year that the new service will make it easier for St Helier residents to get to other parts of the island and for people outside town to get to where they want to go instead of having to walk from Liberation Station.
