Town Park Plans Put To States Debate

The Constable of St Helier has formally lodged a proposition for the government to back plans to double the size of the Millennium Town Park.

Simon Crowcroft has called for Ministers in government to publicly endorse the scheme to extend the green space onto the old gasworks site as far as St Saviour's Road.

An extensive masterplan was drawn up by Andium Homes last summer, which included increasing the size of the park, but it wasn't acted upon.

The plans were drawn up after Andium was denied planning permission to build 122 flats on the eastern end of the gasworks site.

Constable Crowcroft previously told Channel 103 the Chief Minister gave a 'lukewarm' reaction to the plans when they were first drawn up, but the proposals received a more positive response from the Deputy Chief Minister and the Housing & Communities Minister.

The town Constable says the plan offers the island its one and only chance to create a park of significant size in the heart of a growing capital which, if achieved, will maximise the benefit of the park for the community, especially for children.

"As the Parishes of St Helier and St Saviour are increasingly being asked to take responsibility for the thousands of new homes required in Jersey, it seems only right that the quantum of such critical infrastructure as parkland be increased, and that the unique and visionary opportunity offered to the island by Andium Homes be supported by the States Assembly."
