Fair Catch, a small van selling locally caught fish, is proving to be a sell-out success.
Fair Catch launched in mid-September this year, the idea of Herm and Guernsey oyster farmer Justin de Carteret.
The small van sets up on Friday and Saturday mornings by the Bridge clock tower, but Justin says it can be more often, depending on supply:
"This is the great thing as a pop-up. Someone I know went fishing on Sunday and said if there's whole load of mackerel, would you be interested?
"I said let's give it a go, and so we popped up on Monday and sold 150 mackerel in two hours."
He says what is different for Guernsey consumers is that the fresh fish are labelled, so customers can tell exactly who caught it:
"It's about trying to give the fishermen an identity for their catch, so it's not just a Guernsey bass, it would be the person's bass, the one who caught it."
Justin says it has been a real success so far:
"The first day we thought we weren’t going to sell out, but we sold out in an hour.
"We took some more on the second day and we sold out in half an hour, so there's a call for what we’re doing and obviously people want traceability."
Justin says local fishermen face difficult times as octopus are eating crab stocks and exporting fish can be difficult.
But he says the reward is the natural beauty of the islands:
"I put posts up all the time of the crystal waters in Herm and that is on our doorstep but we don't make enough of it."
