Guernsey woman recognised for growing women’s golf

Angela Goddard's commitment to growing women’s and girls’ sport has been recognised on the national stage.

While serving as Guernsey’s Island Team Captain for the Inter-Insulars against Jersey, Angela Goddard says she noticed a lack of female players.

In response, in spring 2019, she founded the Guernsey Women’s Golf Development Squad.

She wanted female players of all abilities to be able to develop their skills.

In 2024, Angela launched the Girls into Golf Squad, offering a supportive environment for girls under 18.

Around 90 women and girls now play regularly through the programmes, with a further 200 reached through taster sessions and outreach work.

Angela's efforts have seen her shortlisted for the prestigious England Golf, Women & Girls Trailblazer award.

After nearly 50 years of playing golf, Angela says she enjoys sharing her love of the sport.

"I am chuffed to bits that it has been a huge success, and the women of Guernsey have joined.

"I think they see the benefits, meeting new people, improving their game, golf is good for exercise and getting out in the fresh air."

Angela and some of her squad will attend the national awards ceremony on 3 March at the Deansgate Hotel in Manchester.
