Guernsey's animal charity condemns exercising dogs in the heat

A video on social media showing a cyclist with a dog running alongside on the road in full sun has shocked the GSPCA.

The extreme heat this week came with the advice from the States about how to keep cool.

The GSPCA also underlined this message for animals, warning against exercising dogs during the heat of the day and not leaving them in cars.

Despite this, a video has been posted on social media, showing a cyclist exercising their dog by tying a long lead to their handlebars and having it run alongside them on a busy road, in the full sun.

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne says this is dangerous:

"Even with the best intentions, activities like running alongside bikes in high temperatures can put dogs at serious risk, particularly due to heat and hot surfaces.

"It's not healthy for the dog (in these temperatures).

"We would urge all pet owners to plan exercise carefully, avoid the heat of the day, and always consider the temperature of the ground as well as the air.

"If it's uncomfortable for us, imagine wearing a fur coat and not having shoes, and walking on that hot tarmac."

Cooler weather has already begun to blow in and by Friday (29 May) Jersey Met forecast a drop in temperatures to 22C.
